It always frustrates me when FFG introduces a themed set of cards in AGOT, but doesn’t follow through to ever make a good deck possible with them. Sometimes, though, that card comes later, such as 3c Bran Stark making direwolf decks possible, and Acolyte of the Waves and Nagga’s ribs enabling Drowned God. Here, in my mind, are the major incomplete themes as of the Kingsmoot pack:
Frey lordling is the only decent neutral Frey card on its own, and you have to play a lot more Freys than them to make Walder Frey and the Twins worth it. The only support for this theme we’ve seen since it was introduced is a decent Lanni Frey, and I’m worried that FFG doesn’t care whether we ever have a tier 1 Frey deck.
Wildlings have a lot more good individual cards that see some play than Freys, but there’s never been a great deck that uses their centerpiece cards Dalla and Mance Rayder to go all in. I’d love to see something push wildlings over the top.
Conclave was released right before the beginning of the cycle, so hopefully we’ll still see some more good maesters coming. That being said, it’s a bit worrying that there were no maesters in Kingsmoot. Lanni Conclave is a solid tier 2 deck, but most other houses can’t do conclave at all.
Brotherhood is, I think, the best Bara deck. However, Brotherhood decks outside of Bara are not a thing. Also, I have to wonder if Brotherhood would still be the best Bara deck if Bara was actually good?
Are there any incomplete themes that I missed? Or suggestions on what cards would make these real decks?January 19, 2018 at 2:58 PM #40586
I hear you on Wildlings. DallaDalla Neutral Character Plot deck limit: 3. Wildling. Reaction: After a Wildling character enters play under your control, draw 1 card. (Limit once per phase.) Watchers on the Wall #40 looks so incredibly good on paper, but we’ve not seen a deck come together that puts her or Mance RayderMance Rayder Neutral Character Plot deck limit: 3. King. Wildling. Renown.
Each Wildling character in your hand gains ambush (X). X is that card’s printed cost.
While there is a Winter plot card revealed, reduce the cost to ambush each of your Wildling characters by 1. Wolves of the North #39 to use yet. Something still feels like it’s missing, though maybe I should give it another try again and see what happens. Maybe using the Brotherhood agenda?
Also, I think it feels like Kingsguard have been abandoned. We got Ser Jaime Lannister LOCRSer Jaime Lannister (LoCR) House Lannister Character Plot deck limit: 3. Kingsguard. Knight. Each Knight character you control gains renown while attacking alone.
Challenges Action: Choose a Kingsguard character. Until the end of the phase, that character gains an icon. (Limit once per phase.) Lions of Casterly Rock #5 and then we’ve not really seen anything since then. I really thought he was going to be the first piece in some kind of deck, but it seems to have really fallen by the wayside. We need a lot of pieces to make this happen. Several more KG and very likely an agenda as well. Maybe some kind of White Cloak attachment that grants the trait similar to KnightedKnighted Neutral Attachment Plot deck limit: 3. Title. Attached character gets +1 STR and gains the Knight trait. The King's Peace #58 .There are no men like me.January 19, 2018 at 7:22 PM #40691
Kingsguard is a great example that I forgot! They even taunted us recently by giving us the Kingslayer attachment that doesn’t work on most of the kinsguard! Who thought that was a good idea?January 20, 2018 at 11:26 AM #40980
Exactly! What a bummer!
Though, there really aren’t enough Kingsguard to make me excited about it even if it did work on them. lolThere are no men like me.January 20, 2018 at 6:37 PM #41707

I’d like to see some more Bloodrider/Dothraki and Sand Snake tech.
Both have some good stuff already, but there’s a bit more required for them to become truly competitive.January 22, 2018 at 12:49 AM #43748
I think we can safely assume that there will probably be more Sand Snakes in the upcoming box. Maesters does seem to need some more support and I’m not quite sure that the Tully theme is fully fleshed out either.January 22, 2018 at 9:40 AM #44535
Something that strikes me as odd about some of these is how I assume we’ll get some pieces to flesh some of them out more but that they’ll be stretched out so far. I could have sworn that was one of the aspects of 1ED that they admitted was a problem and wanted to avoid. Kingsguard is one that really sticks out to me in that regard. Jaime is kind of orphaned there in the box. If the bulk of KG tech eventually comes out in a cycle, then it will rotate and strand him again. If it comes out in another box, we’re waiting quite awhile.
Granted, we’ve been waiting quite awhile already, I suppose. There are no men like me.January 22, 2018 at 4:15 PM #45369
That’s a good point about the Kingsguard trait. I wonder the same thing about the Small Council trait. As it is, it doesn’t really have a coherent strategy or theme. Right now Bara has the most Small Council cards but it’s not clear how the trait is supposed to help Bara decks do what they want to do. Lanni might be able to utilize it, but I don’t see The Council ConsentsThe Council Consents Neutral Event Plot deck limit: 3. Small Council. Reaction: After a player wins an challenge by 5 or more STR, stand each Small Council character. Lions of Casterly Rock #44 making its way into any Lanni decks anytime soon.January 23, 2018 at 12:12 PM #46436
Ahh yeah, I had forgotten about Small Council Consents and how there have never been enough Small Council characters for that to matter.
Something that strikes me as odd about some of these is how I assume we’ll get some pieces to flesh some of them out more but that they’ll be stretched out so far. I could have sworn that was one of the aspects of 1ED that they admitted was a problem and wanted to avoid.
Yeah, it’s a really inefficient use of cards. The third cycle, for instance, had 6 Frey cards that currently see almost no play. Maybe a couple more Freys come out and they become decent, but if so, wouldn’t it have been better to have waited till that cycle and released all the Freys then? We could’ve gotten 6 good cards in the third cycle instead.
On the other hand, maybe this is just FFG’s way of using the actual meta as free playtesting? They release 6 Freys, see if anyone plays Frey decks, then if they don’t, design some new Freys that will come out down the line? The problem is the design process is so slow that any cards released in reaction to a theme’s underwhelming response will come much later, and be out of sync on rotation.
I hate to sound like Aaron Glazer, but could a restricted list be the answer here? Err on the side of overpowered themes, then restrict them if it becomes a problem?January 23, 2018 at 11:37 PM #47175
I think that themes are especially problematic and slow to flesh out in an LCG. The design and release process is slow, and unless you go all in on one specific theme for a house in a couple chapter packs or a deluxe then you are left with releasing cards for that theme piecemeal. You run the risk of angering players who want “good stuff” cards for a specific faction if you release too many theme/keyword cards at a time. This, on the other hand, means that those themes or “tribal” cards are more spread out and never really feel complete for the players that want to play those cards. It’s a rock and a hard place scenario. While I’d love to see more Maester or Clansman cards, I understand why those cards are slow to be released. A restricted list might be one way of handling the situation, but I’m not convinced that it’s the best solution, or one that FFG really wants to utilize.January 29, 2018 at 2:31 PM #49719

What about companions? I’m feeling really left out that Hot Pie seems to be the only piece to tie that together and he’s… well…. he’s Hot Pie.
This giant Lucas Longinch did not daunt him half so much as the prospect of facing the Red Widow.
